A Juju u-turn? The truth behind the #MalemaReturnsToANC hashtag

What’s a Friday morning on Twitter without a bit of controversy? South Africans have woke up to a rather bizarre top trend today, as #MalemaReturnsToANC was at the summit of the most popular topics. But what is the truth behind the hashtag that claims Julius Malema is going back to his old party?

#MalemaReturnsToANC – what’s it all about?

Well, it’s a fallacy. It’s not based on any news story or important political developments, and it seems to be something of a cynical ploy from Twitter users. The hashtag has been created overnight to encourage accounts to boost their numbers of followers. Indeed, the eye-catching phrase seems to have helped.

And, for those of us needing official confirmation, EFF representative Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has completely rubbished the rumours that have emerged from the campaign, labeling them as ‘fake news’:

Julius Malema had previously served as the ANC Youth League leader, before acrimoniously splitting with the ruling party. He formed the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in 2013, and just six years later, Juju and his comrades managed to secure more than 10% of the vote at the 2019 Elections.

Will Julius Malema return to the ANC? Fat chance…

Rumours of his departure remain unfounded, and as for Malema going back to the party that dumped him all those years ago? You can forget it, the bad blood is still there for all to see:

This was him in 2019:

“When am I going back to the ANC? Never. Not even in my next life”

And in 2018…

“I won’t do it [go back to the ANC], that thing is dead. Worse they now have two presidents, one for ANC of Natal called Zupta and ‘Ramapostponer’ for the rest and now I must go and join the confusion, never.”

And in the years before that…

“The ANC have reached a cul-de-sac, either way there’ll be a breakaway of permanent people with a serious following. The problem with ANC is where it loses power, it loses it’s ‘creme-de-la-creme’, and drunkards take over.” Protection Status
