Ford SA launches esports sim racing competition

The competition aims to pit all levels of gamer-drivers against each other playing on the PlayStation 4 platformed Gran Turismo Sport. Prizes include a Logitech G29 sim racing steering and pedal system as well as some Ford performance gear.

How do I get in?

You need to register here and join the Discord app. It is a free app within the iOS or Android App stores. That done, you need to get ready for qualifying.

The competition is reported to allow most skillsets to participate but qualifying will ensure fair pairing over three points-scoring rounds, from which an accrued points total will be used to find the top 10 best drivers. These top 10 will then go head-to-head in the final championship round.

It’s an exciting and opportune time for Ford to launch a competition such as this. The surge in gaming across all levels of device and platform particularly over this lockdown is testament to this. Whilst gaming has enjoyed growth over the last decade, the lockdown has accelerated existing trends.

A celebration of Ford Racing

For Ford, it presents a marketing and interactive exercise — a chance to connect and engage with fans, customers, and potential customers at large. It’s also a chance to celebrate Ford’s racing heritage, evident in the number of Ford racing cars in Gran Turismo Sport including the Ford GT40, Ford Mustang and Ford Focus rally car. The game’s variety of circuits will put these machines to the ultimate test in an immersive and competitive environment.

Doreen Mashinini, General Manager of Marketing at Ford SA unpacks the company’s vision with this competition.

“We know many of our customers are missing their car during this time of restricted travel, or simply dream of driving our exciting Ford Performance models like the legendary Ford Mustang.”

“That’s why we are excited to launch a virtual racing championship on Gran Turismo Sport during a time when esports’ growth is eclipsing mainstream sport both in viewership and commercial aspects. The fact that our competition will run over National Video Game Day on 8 July is added reason for celebration.”
