Pokémon is getting a new board game based on the trading card game

The Pokémon Company itself, recently released an official press release announcing the new board game officially called the Pokémon Trading Card Game Battle Academy.

Pokémon as a card game is nothing new though. Pokémon fans around the world have been playing in high stakes tournaments since the nineties, with some card decks even reaching into the hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase, and some individual cards costing as much as $200,000 or about R3.4 million. The card game itself has become so popular that new decks are being developed and released all the time.

This new game though will officially be the first of its kind, in that a Pokémon card game in the form of a board game has never been done in this capacity before.

The Pokémon board game

The Pokémon Company consumer marketing senior director JC Smith was quoted as saying: “Battle Academy is designed to be easy to learn and fun to play for all types of trainers, including children and parents that may be new to the Pokémon TCG. Pokémon has a unique ability to bring people together, and we look forward to seeing families enjoy Battle Academy at their next game night, as parents’ bond with their kids over one of their favourite entertainment brands and collectible Pokémon TCG cards.”

In the press release they have also detailed what we can expect from this exciting new game.

For example, in every box of Battle Academy we will receive a two-player game board and three full 60-card decks. Numerous tutorial guides explain the game to us as well as various other thrilling goodies including QR code cards to unlock the decks in the Pokémon Trading Card Game online. All of these elements will come together to make the game a fun experience to have with your family or just an enjoyable games night with your friends.

There will be three decks included in the game. With one featuring the illusive Mewtwo, one featuring our favourite little yellow electric Pikachu and the third will feature none other than the cutest dragon hybrid Charizard.

Pokémon Battle Academy will be released on 21 June at Target in the US  and will be available at other major retailers worldwide on 31 July.
