What is Gamescom

Gamescom is an annual video game convention typically held at the Koelnmesse exhibition center in Cologne, Germany. It’s the largest gaming convention in the world; only rivalled by E3 and Tokyo Game Show.

It’s is the world’s largest gaming event in terms of exhibition space and number of visitors. More than 373 000 visitors from over 100 countries visited the Cologne-based games event in 2019.

Of those, 31 300 were trade visitors and 1 153 were companies, which was an increase of 10% from 2018, when 370 000 people and 1 037 exhibitors from 56 countries attended the event.

We’ve had a decade of Gamescom, first held in August 2009; 245 000 people attended the event and notable press conferences included EA, Sony, Namco and Konami. The latter was Hideo Kojima’s previous affiliation.

Due to the spread of the coronavirus and the implementation of lockdown protocols around the world, the organisers went virtual instead of cancelling the show altogether.
