Final Fantasy XVI remake announced as PlayStation 5 console exclusive

Sony hosted its second PS5 Event on Wednesday, 16 September 2020. If you missed it, we’ve compiled a recap of all the biggest announcements here.

Final Fantasy XVI – What we know

It’s a single-player action-RPG (role-playing game) and Japanese anthology series which was first released back in 1987 and the setting for the Final Fantasy XVI looks pretty dang dark.

Following Sony’s September Showcase, Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida and director Hiroshi Takai explained that the “footage comprised of both battles and cutscenes running in real-time”.

“[It] represents but a fraction of what our team has accomplished since the start of development on this, an all-new Final Fantasy game. In that span, the team’s size has grown from a handful of core members to a full-fledged unit that continues to polish and build upon what they have created so far, all to provide players an experience unmatched in terms of story and gameplay”.

Watch: Final Fantasy XVI announcement trailer

The trailer has everything we love about Final Fantasy: mostly crystals and chocobos. The trailer shows Shiva, Ifrit, Phoenix, and what looks like Titan.

It will be a PS5 console exclusive, but will also be released on PC at some point in the near future.

Earlier this year, director Naoki Yoshida downplayed rumours that he was directing of Final Fantasy 16. He even called it fake news. However, he never said he wasn’t producing it.

Sneaky, sneaky, because Final Fantasy XVI was in fact directed by Hiroshi Takai. Yoshida, who had been a director and producer of FF14 for more than seven years, said at the time:

“Ah, looks like some kind of big fake news came out. I’ll say it clearly – it’s annoying. I’m still going to continue being in charge of FF14 for more years to come (as long as I don’t die from sickness or accident). So please ignore any non-official announcements. It’s so bothersome”.

‘Worth the wait’

There’s more coming; Square Enix’s next big information reveal will take place during 2021. Takai also reminisced about being “just another player, a student with big dreams” when Final Fantasy I was released.

By the time Final Fantasy V was in production Takai had already earned his seat at the developers’ table. He is proud of the work his team achieved and the “countless challenges” they’ve taken on.

“And though we’re pouring our hearts and souls into this project each and every day, it may still be some time before we can get it into your hands. However, I promise it will be worth the wait!”
