This is what the Huawei Mate X2 could look like [video]

The team at Let’s Go Digital reports that the Mate X2 will be a “foldable smartphone with an inwardly flexible display and a large cover screen”.

Huawei will be announcing the new Mate 40 series on 22 October 2020. Other than the Mate 40 –  Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro, Mate 40 Pro Plus. We could also expect a series of new devices and wearables.

The manufacturing giant already introduced the foldable Huawei Mate X and Mate Xs, and the question now remains if we will be seeing a follow-up to that, possible titled Huawei Mate X2 – at the upcoming event.

Huawei Mate X2 – What we know

The Huawei Mate X2 (code-named Teton) is reportedly under development seems similar to the Galaxy Fold 2 in the sense that it folds inward. According to Let’s Go Digital:

“Huawei’s current folding phones certainly look imposing, however, an outwardly folding flexible screen makes the device significantly more vulnerable than its Samsung counterparts. The Mate X2 seems to change that.”

As per the patent, the device will also have an extra cover display on the outside. This provides an additional yet functional display for when the device is folded.

Based on the information provided in the patent, 3D graphic designer Jermaine Smit, aka Concept Creator created the renders used in this article, as well as the Mate X2 introduction video.

Advanced camera setup

The camera is not visible at all when the device is open. Instead of utilising a punch-hole camera on the front of the flexible screen (as can be seen with the Galaxy Fold 2), Huawei chose to place the camera setup at the rear.

That means one would theoretically not be able to make a video call while running other applications, such as social media or email apps. If you want to make video calls, you would have to rely on the smaller cover display.

A dual selfie camera can be seen on the “cover screen”, similar to the Huawei P40 series.

Design and display

The front cover screen is functional even when the phone is used in its folded or “closed” position. While it couldn’t be confirmed, rumour has it the Mate X2’s small cover screen measures 4.5 inches, while the phone measures 8 inches.

If that’s the case, the Mate X2 would be slightly larger than the Galaxy Fold 2. According to Let’s Go Digital, the bendable display of the Huawei Mate X2 is manufactured by Samsung and BOE.

The device appears to have a fingerprint sensor on the side. Interestingly, the foldable phone seems to be thicker at the at top. Perhaps due to the camera placement?

However, unlike Samsung, Huawei will not use Ultra-Thin Glass. Instead, they will be opting for the less scratch-resistant CPI (colourless polyimide), according to trusted analyst Ross Young:

“Mate X2 is in-folding like the Z Fold 2 and will be sourced from Samsung and BOE. No UTG, CPI instead. But perhaps you already knew all that.”
