‘Pokemon GO’ earns R28 billion thanks to in-game changes during 2020

Pokémon GO is estimated to have brought in more than $1 billion (approximately R28 billion) in 2020, according to Sensor Tower. Developer Niantic witnessed a spike in the number of players since the game was launched in 2016.

‘Pokémon’ GO rise to fame

The mobile game earned more than $832 million during its first year of launch; however, player spending did drop a bit in the year 2017, only to start climbing in 2018 and 2019.

The game’s success is due to the fact that Niantic implemented in-game changes during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. Pokemon GO depends a lot on using augmented reality; the game projects pocket monsters for players to catch in the real-world.

The changes implemented changed the way the game functioned. It is now better-suited stay-at-home orders and provided extra motivation to start up the game.

Pokémon GO has become the world’s third-highest mobile game in player spending outside of third-party stores. Tencent’s PUBG Mobile holds the number one spot while Honor Kings follows closely behind taking the second spot.

A majority of the revenue has come from Google Play accounts; these generated over $2.2 billion since the game’s launch while Apple’s App Store generated $1.9 billion.

‘Pokémon GO’ in-game events

Pokémon GO’s regular updates and charming events have helped the game maintain its position. The augmented reality-powered mobile game has seen and generated about 600 million installs to date, with the U.S. leading the chart at 109 million installs.

The developer is now adding in-game events, cosmetic items, optional Community Day research tickets, and other items to further increase user spendings in-game.

It’s safe to say that Niantic is surely having a lucrative year, and the company even went on to highlight how they plan to remove some of the stay-at-home features. It will be interesting to see if Pokémon GO will maintain its upward success in 2021.
