What did Chidimma win – and will her prizemoney be taxed?

Chidimma Adetshina has not only walked away from her pageant critics with the last laugh after winning Miss Universe Nigeria but a number of prizes, including cash.

The South African-born 23-year-old model shocked the African continent when she was crowned as the new queen over the weekend.

Amid the celebrations, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) is continuing its investigation of possible identity theft and fraud by her parents, a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother.

Chidimma is set to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe finale in Mexico in November.

CHIDIMMA ADETSHINA: WHAT PRIZES DID SHE WIN?

As the new Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina was awarded N10 million in cash (over R100 000) along with other prizes from various sponsors.

Chidimma will also travel to Mexico to represent Nigeria at an international pageant.

Pageant CEO Guy Murray-Bruce told Arise News: “It’s a great opportunity for the winner to go to Miss Universe and participate with 100+ participants from around the world.

He added the onus was on the winner to network and market herself to further her career ambitions.

COULD HER WINNINGS BE TAXED?

On social media, many are wondering if Chidimma Adetshina will ever return to South Africa following her Miss Universe Nigeria win.

And if she does, will her prizemoney be taxed by SARS?

According to TaxTim, international competition winnings are considered capital in nature and, therefore, not taxable in SA. However, Chidimma is required to declare the prize money in the non-taxable income section of her next tax return.

MZANSI TO MEXICO: WHAT ABOUT CHIDIMMA’S IDENTITY DOCUMENTS?

With Chidimma Adetshina set to travel to Miss Universe in Mexico, how does the DHA investigation impact her plans?

According to the DHA, Chidimma is still in possession of a South African ID and travel documents.

However, the findings of their identity theft and fraud allegations against her parents could change that.  If their permanent residency or citizenship is deemed fraudulent, then this may render them illegal foreign nationals.

DHA revealed that they are seeking legal advice on how this affects Chidimma’s citizenship status.

Surprisingly, Miss Universe organisers has made amendments that titleholders do not necessarily have to be born or live in the country they represent.
