Modiba Confident in Sundowns’ Prospects in CAF Champions League

Aubrey Modiba, a defender for Mamelodi Sundowns, is optimistic about the team’s chances of winning the coveted CAF Champions League this season, with the club’s sole continental victory dating back to 2016 during Pitso Mosimane’s tenure.

The Tshwane giants are preparing to take on last season’s runners-up, Esperance de Tunis, at Loftus Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. Following this match, Miguel Cardoso’s side will travel to Tunisia for the second leg of their quarterfinal encounter the following week.

Since the 2018/19 season, Sundowns have made it to the quarterfinals of Africa’s premier club tournament four times, reaching the semi-finals on three occasions. Despite their achievements in advancing to the knockout stages, Masandawana often face difficulties in the later rounds of the competition.

Currently, the Downs’ left-back emphasizes that they are continually working on their weaknesses on the continental front as they seek to alter this pattern. Furthermore, the former SuperSport United player asserts that the club has heavily invested in the squad, boosting their prospects for success in Africa.

“We address this [challenge] every season; we repeatedly fall short in the semi-finals or quarterfinals, but we acknowledge that these matches are demanding. Each season, we aspire for that second star,” Modiba stated.

“We are aware of the challenges that the Champions League poses, but I have faith that we have a strong squad, a capable team ready to compete, supported by a dedicated technical staff.

“We are committed to making the most of this season because we truly aim to reach the finals – getting to the finals presents us with an opportunity to secure the trophy.”

After finishing as runners-up behind AS FAR of Morocco in the group stage, the South African champions face the daunting task of playing the crucial return leg away from home. Modiba emphasizes the importance of getting a win at home.

“We are approaching each match with determination. Our focus is on tomorrow’s game, and we are striving for a positive result, especially at home, considering we suffered a defeat on our own ground last season,” the 29-year-old noted.

“Our goal is to win our home games to enhance our chances in the next round. Therefore, securing a home victory is essential, and with the away goal rule still in play, these factors are significant as we prepare for this match.

“We are optimistic that this season will be more fruitful, and we will make considerable headway. We will continue to take it one game at a time.”

Modiba, who has celebrated seven titles with the Chloorkop-based club since joining in 2020, is eager to increase his tally of 26 appearances across all competitions this season, having contributed four assists as well.
