Anthropic Introduces AI-Powered Web Search API
Anthropic has launched a new API that allows its Claude AI models to conduct internet searches. A press release issued on Wednesday states that developers can build Claude-driven applications that offer real-time information.
The introduction of the API aligns with AI companies’ initiatives to improve their models to draw in new users. Recently, Anthropic also revealed a tool for linking applications to Claude and an enhanced “deep research” feature that enables Claude to sift through enterprise accounts, websites, and more.
“Developers can now augment Claude’s vast knowledge with real-time data by enabling the web search feature during API requests,” Anthropic stated in its announcement. “With the web search capability, developers can craft AI solutions that incorporate up-to-date information without needing to manage their own web search systems.”
Once the web search API is enabled, Claude will utilize “reasoning” abilities to determine if a request would benefit from current insights or specialized knowledge. If it opts to search online, Claude will create a search query, collect results, analyze them, and provide an answer with citations.
Claude can also refine its queries and execute multiple searches, employing previous results to inform subsequent inquiries. Developers can customize this functionality, specifying which domains Claude can or cannot search. Furthermore, they can manage web search usage at the organizational level, according to Anthropic.
Pricing begins at $10 for every 1,000 searches. This feature is compatible with Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet, the newer Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku models.

Additionally, Anthropic is adding web search capabilities to Claude Code, a tool designed for developers to utilize Claude for various programming tasks. With the web search feature activated, Claude Code can access the latest API documentation, technical articles, and other valuable resources related to development tools and libraries.
