Bill Gates Directs His Foundation to Deplete Funds by 2045

Today, the Gates Foundation made a noteworthy announcement about its future.

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and a prominent philanthropist, revealed that his foundation has set a 20-year timeline to fully leverage its resources and wind down its operations. He has pledged to donate 99% of his wealth, estimated at approximately $107 billion, to the foundation. Throughout these two decades, he expects the foundation to contribute over $200 billion in grants.

“This choice embodies a moment of reflection for me,” Gates stated on his website, Gates Notes. “This year is not only the 25th anniversary of the foundation but also significant for other reasons: it would have marked my father’s 100th birthday, Microsoft is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and I will turn 70 this October.”

Gates’s total donation is anticipated to be the second-largest philanthropic contribution in U.S. history, when adjusted for inflation, with Warren Buffett, whose net worth is estimated at $160 billion, likely to take the lead.

Initially, the Gates Foundation was projected to close 20 years after Gates’s death. At 69, the Microsoft founder appears to be in great health, signaling a significant shift in the foundation’s timeline.

Over its 25 years, the Gates Foundation has already invested more than $100 billion into various initiatives primarily focused on health, education, global development, and gender equality.

Many beneficiaries of the Gates Foundation have included people in low-income areas struggling with widespread and often deadly diseases such as malaria.

This announcement occurs during a period when the Trump administration is cutting back on foreign aid. USAID, one agency impacted by these cuts, previously oversaw more than $35 billion in congressional funding each year. The Gates Foundation estimates it will spend around $9 billion annually through 2045.
