Google Unveils AI Tools to Protect Chrome Users Against Scams

On Thursday, Google unveiled its latest AI-driven security measures designed to combat scams in Chrome. The tech giant will deploy Gemini Nano, its on-device large language model (LLM), on desktop systems to protect users from online fraud. Furthermore, new AI-generated alerts will be introduced in Chrome on Android to notify users about spam notifications.

According to Google, Chrome’s Enhanced Protection mode under Safe Browsing offers the most robust security, providing twice the defense against phishing and other online threats compared to the Standard Protection mode. With the integration of Gemini Nano, users in Enhanced Protection mode will enjoy an additional layer of security against online scams.

Google highlights that this on-device approach will deliver real-time insights into dangerous websites, protecting users from scams, including those not previously recognized.

“Gemini Nano’s LLM is perfectly suited for this task due to its ability to analyze the varied and complex nature of websites, allowing us to respond more quickly to emerging scam tactics,” Google mentioned in a blog post.

The company is already utilizing this AI-based defense against deceptive tech support claims and intends to extend its use to Android devices and various forms of scams in the future.

Regarding the new AI-generated warnings, Google notes that the risks associated with scam sites often extend beyond the site itself, particularly if notifications are active. Malicious sites can leverage notifications to mislead users, which is why Chrome will now help identify harmful, spammy, or misleading notifications on Android devices.

When Chrome’s on-device machine learning model identifies a notification that could be associated with a scam, users will receive a notification. Users have the option to unsubscribe from the notifications or to view the blocked content. If they believe the warning was erroneous, they can choose to allow all future notifications from that site.

In line with this announcement, Google revealed that it has been utilizing AI to combat scams in Search, successfully identifying and blocking hundreds of millions of deceptive results each day. Their AI-driven systems have reportedly captured 20 times more scammy pages.

For example, Google has observed an increase in scammers posing as airline customer service representatives to deceive individuals seeking help. The company claims to have reduced these scams by over 80%, significantly lessening the chances of users encountering fraudulent phone numbers in Search.
