OpenAI and FDA Allegedly in Discussions About AI for Drug Assessments

On Wednesday, Wired reported that OpenAI has been in discussions with officials from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate the role of AI in speeding up drug evaluations.

The conversations have featured a project called cderGPT, which seems to be an AI tool intended for the Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE). This center is responsible for regulating both over-the-counter and prescription drugs in the U.S. There are also reports of representatives from Elon Musk’s DOGE participating in these discussions.

It’s common for drug development to take more than ten years. OpenAI’s partnership with the FDA aims to reduce this time frame, especially during the later phases, as noted by Wired. AI is seen as a promising tool to improve various stages of drug development, potentially making traditionally lengthy processes more efficient. However, challenges persist regarding the dependability of AI models and the best ways to manage them.
