OpenAI Launches Data Residency Initiative in Asia

On Thursday, OpenAI announced a new data residency initiative in Asia, following the launch of a similar program in Europe earlier this February.

The initiative is tailored for OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, and the OpenAI API, aiming to help organizations in Asia comply with local data sovereignty regulations while leveraging the company’s AI solutions. Qualified API users and new subscribers of ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu can choose to have their data securely stored in supported countries such as Japan, India, Singapore, and South Korea.

According to a blog post from OpenAI, “For the API platform and ChatGPT business products, your data remains private, secure, and fully under your ownership. Data residency further enhances the control over data for organizations.”

The launch of the Asia data residency program aligns with OpenAI’s ambition to accelerate its global expansion. This week, the company also unveiled OpenAI for Countries, a project aimed at building the necessary infrastructure to better serve its international clientele.
