Snap Map Reaches Significant Milestone: 400 Million Monthly Active Users

On Wednesday, Snapchat announced that Snap Map has exceeded 400 million monthly active users, highlighting a notable achievement for this crucial app feature.

Launched in 2017, Snap Map initially permitted users to track their friends’ locations and explore public snaps from across the globe. Over time, this feature has evolved, now allowing users to discover nearby attractions and activities.

The triumph of Snap Map is essential for Snapchat, functioning as a central part of the social network and offering a competitive edge over platforms like Instagram and TikTok, which do not provide real-time social discovery akin to Snap Map.

Instagram appears cognizant of this, as the Meta-owned platform has been reportedly working on a “Friend Map” feature that would enable users to track their friends’ locations in real time.

“Snap Map is among the most extensively used mobile mapping tools worldwide, and we’re thrilled to see our community continue to grow,” remarked Ceci Mourkogiannis, VP of Product at Snap, in a statement to TechCrunch. “Snap Map fosters connections for millions, allowing them to engage with friends and favorite spots while uncovering local events, making the world feel more interconnected each day.”

This announcement arrives as Snapchat has been updating Snap Map with new functionalities over the years. Last year, the company rolled out a “Footsteps” feature, enabling users to see the extent of the world they’ve explored and track their journeys.

Moreover, Snapchat introduced “Promoted Places” within Snap Map, offering users a way to discover new locations. For businesses, Promoted Places presents an opportunity to advertise and showcase their various locations on Snap Map.
