Multiple Users Reporting X Timelines Not Updating
Late on Thursday evening, numerous users on X, the social media platform owned by billionaire Elon Musk, experienced interruptions in timeline updates.
Many users reported that notifications stopped working yesterday, meaning they are no longer alerted about new posts from their followed accounts on X. This reporter is facing a similar issue, as my X timeline hasn’t refreshed for 15 hours, since around 6 p.m. Eastern on May 8.
It appears to be a server-side problem. Affected users have indicated that their timelines aren’t updating on both the X mobile apps and the web interface. Similarly, I have witnessed the same issue. Switching devices or browsers doesn’t help, nor does subscribing to X’s premium service, X Premium.
Downdetector, a platform that monitors the real-time status of various apps and services, has observed a spike in reports of X outages over the last 24 hours. Additionally, multiple threads regarding the X notifications issue emerged on Reddit overnight.
“I haven’t received any notifications since about 10 p.m. last night here in Germany!” shared one user in a thread on X’s unofficial subreddit. Another user remarked, “I thought uninstalling and reinstalling the app would fix the issue, but it didn’t.”
X has not yet responded to a request for comments.
The last major outage X encountered was in March, when users worldwide were unexpectedly disconnected from the platform, struggling to access feeds, send messages, and engage with content. Musk attributed the disruption to a cyberattack, though without providing evidence.

Prior to this outage, X faced significant connectivity challenges in December 2022 and July 2023.
After Musk acquired X, previously known as Twitter, for $44 billion in 2022, he quickly reduced the workforce by around 80%, from 7,500 employees to 1,300. Reports indicate that X had only 550 full-time engineers as of January 2023, according to CNBC. A new round of layoffs affected the company in November 2024, primarily impacting its engineering team.
