Apple Unveils Emergency Satellite Features for iPhone 13 in iOS 18.5 Update

On Monday, Apple unveiled iOS 18.5, introducing emergency satellite features to iPhone 13 users for the very first time. Previously, this capability was limited to iPhone 14 and newer models.

The iPhone’s emergency satellite system is built for critical scenarios when cellular or Wi-Fi signals aren’t available. It allows users to contact emergency services, send satellite texts, share information with emergency contacts, or request roadside assistance.

The primary focus of the iOS 18.5 update is to improve access to satellite services provided by carriers, such as T-Mobile (in collaboration with Starlink). Users can check their eligibility for this feature in the Cellular settings menu on their iPhones.

This capability has been credited with saving lives, aiding rescuers in finding lost or injured hikers, and ensuring safety during wildfires and other emergencies.

The availability of satellite emergency services for iPhone 13 users is the highlight of iOS 18.5, although there are additional minor improvements for all iPhone users.

Among these enhancements is a new feature in Screen Time, Apple’s parental control tool, which alerts parents if their child successfully enters the parent’s passcode to gain Screen Time access.

Further updates include an upgraded Mail app that makes accessing the “All Mail” category easier as a distinct tab; a new Pride wallpaper; and a streamlined process for subscribing to content via the Apple TV app on smart TVs or connected devices. Additionally, Apple has fixed a bug that caused the Apple Vision Pro app to launch with a black screen if it was downloaded from the App Store, along with resolving various issues related to Siri and enterprise app launches.
