Meta’s Hiring Boom Brings Onboard Three Researchers from OpenAI

In the fiercely competitive arena for top-tier AI talent, Meta has allegedly clinched a win by onboarding three researchers from OpenAI, despite Sam Altman’s public mockery of Mark Zuckerberg’s lavish recruiting approaches.

The latest recruits in Zuckerberg’s well-publicized hiring frenzy are Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, who played pivotal roles in launching OpenAI’s Zurich branch. According to the WSJ, this development suggests that Zuckerberg’s strategies are proving effective.

As detailed by OpenAI CEO Altman in a recent podcast with his brother Jack, Zuckerberg has been offering financial packages surpassing $100 million to lure top talent from OpenAI. The Journal also noted that Zuckerberg has been personally reaching out through WhatsApp to numerous leading AI researchers, curating his target list via a “Recruiting Party 🎉” chat and hosting dinners at his homes in Palo Alto and Lake Tahoe.

The success of this strategy has seen mixed results. Recently, Zuckerberg attracted Scale AI’s CEO Alexandr Wang with a $14 billion investment, making the 28-year-old one of the most valuable hires in tech history. However, notable targets like OpenAI co-founders Ilya Sutskever and John Schulman have eluded Meta, as both have moved on to establish new startups, according to the WSJ.

In that podcast, Altman reflected on Zuckerberg’s recruitment strategy: “I’m really happy that, at least so far, none of our best people have decided to take him up on [those offers].”
