Authors Call on Publishers to Establish AI Integration Guidelines

A public letter, supported by prominent authors such as Lauren Groff, Lev Grossman, R.F. Kuang, Dennis Lehane, and Geoffrey Maguire, calls on book publishers to reduce their reliance on AI technologies, emphasizing the vital role of human narrators in audiobooks.

The letter highlights that AI companies profit from writers’ work, stating, “Instead of sharing in the revenue generated from our contributions, another party profits from technologies developed using our unpaid labor.”

The signatories urge publishers to “commit to avoiding the release of machine-generated books” and to “preserve human roles instead of letting these roles be overtaken by AI tools or relegated to mere oversight of AI operations.”

Since its publication, a substantial number of signatures have been gathered, with NPR reporting over 1,100 individuals had endorsed the letter within the first 24 hours.

Additionally, authors are considering legal actions against tech companies for using their works to train AI models, despite recent federal court rulings that present significant hurdles for such cases.
