OpenAI Raises Salaries to Compete with Meta’s Hiring Strategies

After Meta successfully onboarded multiple senior researchers, an OpenAI executive assured employees on Saturday that the leadership does not simply “passively observe.”

“I’m overwhelmed with emotion, sensing that our industry has been compromised and something precious has been lost,” stated Chief Research Officer Mark Chen in a Slack message obtained by Wired.

With Meta’s significant increase in new hires, Chen noted that he, CEO Sam Altman, and other leaders at OpenAI have been actively engaging with those contemplating new career opportunities. He stressed their intensified efforts to review compensation and explore creative methods to recognize and reward outstanding talent.

Recently, multiple news outlets reported that eight researchers transitioned from OpenAI to Meta. Altman even voiced his apprehensions during a podcast about Meta allegedly offering “$100 million signing bonuses,” a statement that has ignited discussions among Meta executives.
