Tesla Unveils Driverless Model Y Delivery to Customer, Highlighting Robotaxi Technology

Shortly after launching a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, Tesla conducted another demonstration to highlight the progress in its self-driving car technology. The automaker allowed a Model Y SUV to travel about 15 miles from its factory to the new owner’s residence, an event that CEO Elon Musk described as the first “autonomous delivery” of a consumer vehicle.

Although the car was reportedly equipped with the same software as Tesla’s robotaxi Model Ys in Austin, it was switched to the commercial Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software upon delivery. This version requires drivers to remain vigilant and ready to take over control at any moment. There was no one inside the vehicle, and Musk claimed that no remote assistance was offered during the trip.

This event coincided with a significant moment for Tesla, which is set to announce its second-quarter delivery figures and financial results later this month. These results are expected to reveal a downturn for Tesla, following a sales dip in 2024—especially after Musk’s controversial associations with the Trump administration adversely affected the company’s public perception. Notably, Tesla’s stock price rose on Friday when Musk first mentioned the delivery, but it has since dropped following a difficult trading day on Monday.

Having lived in the area, I often traveled the South Austin route the Model Y took; it’s a challenging path, even on a clear sunny day. In the 30-minute video of the journey (Tesla also released a fast-paced version lasting about 3.5 minutes), the vehicle merges on and off a highway, makes a right turn on red, navigates a small roundabout, and executes an unprotected left turn.

These situations posed considerable hurdles for autonomous vehicles just a few years ago, making it remarkable to see a car handling them smoothly among real traffic.

Tesla isn’t the only player adept at managing this blend of highways and surface streets. Waymo vehicles have been navigating highways in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco (limited to employees to date), while Zoox recently provided a driverless ride across various 45-mile-per-hour roads and side streets in Las Vegas this January.

Although Tesla’s video of the drive is straightforward, it raises numerous questions, particularly regarding the preparations Tesla made before permitting this vehicle to leave the factory.

This concern is relevant given Tesla’s history of releasing a 2016 video showcasing a car seemingly driving itself through the Bay Area (with an employee in the driver’s seat as a safety measure). This video faced criticism as misleading and potentially staged.

At that time, Tesla made the drive appear simple. However, the route had been pre-mapped, and multiple attempts were conducted before the showcased drive, requiring intervention from the safety operator. In a 2022 deposition, Tesla engineer Ashok Elluswamy indicated that the “intent of the video was not to accurately portray what was available for customers in 2016. It was to illustrate what could be developed into the system.”

Musk was significantly involved in the production of that video as well.

Tesla vehicles have been observed using lidar and other external sensors in the South Austin area where the limited robotaxi trial is in effect—were these vehicles utilized in the preparations for this specific drive? We have reached out to Tesla, but the company has ceased responding to media inquiries.

Furthermore, can Tesla’s software complete this route safely multiple times without requiring intervention (either in-car or remotely)? Hundreds of times? Thousands? While achieving this once is undoubtedly a feat, the ability to replicate such a drive safely will ultimately assess the technology’s reliability.

Additionally, this customer delivery drive takes place amidst Musk’s bold claims (originally made in 2016 and reiterated in subsequent years) that Tesla’s self-driving software would successfully transport a car from Los Angeles to New York City without any human interventions.

Like the initial robotaxi tests, many uncertainties linger about the technology’s performance and its potential for effective scaling.

Interestingly, one of the most significant criticisms raised by Dan O’Dowd, a prominent critic of Tesla’s FSD software, was that the car ultimately stopped in a fire lane outside the customer’s apartment. While it’s a legitimate concern, it seems relatively minor coming from someone whose organization recently staged scenarios involving child-sized dummies in front of Model Y SUVs.
