Amazon Celebrates the Launch of Its One Millionth Robot and Introduces a New Generative AI Model

After 13 years of incorporating robots into its warehouses, Amazon has reached a notable achievement.

On Monday, the tech behemoth revealed that it now operates 1 million robots across its warehouses, with the latest units recently introduced to an Amazon fulfillment center in Japan.

This achievement positions Amazon to approach another significant threshold: its vast network of warehouses may soon host as many robots as human workers, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The WSJ further highlighted that 75% of Amazon’s global deliveries are currently facilitated by robots in some form.

TechCrunch has contacted Amazon for additional information.

Moreover, the company announced the launch of a new generative AI model called DeepFleet for its warehouse robots. This AI model aims to enhance the efficiency of the robots’ routing within the warehouses, targeting an improvement of 10%, according to Amazon.

Amazon developed DeepFleet using Amazon SageMaker, the AWS cloud platform dedicated to building and deploying AI models, training it on its proprietary warehouse and inventory data.

The achievement of the one millionth robot is more than just a number; it reflects Amazon’s significant progress in its robotic fleet over the years, introducing enhanced capabilities and new models.

In May, the company unveiled its latest robot, Vulcan, which boasts two arms: one for reorganizing inventory and another fitted with a camera and suction cup for picking items. Notably, Vulcan robots come equipped with a sense of “touch,” enabling them to feel the items they manipulate, as per Amazon.

In October 2024, Amazon introduced its “next-generation fulfillment centers,” which will feature ten times the number of robots compared to current facilities, alongside human personnel. The first of these enhanced centers opened shortly thereafter in Shreveport, Louisiana, close to the Texas border.

Amazon began its journey in robotic development back in 2012 with the acquisition of Kiva Systems.
