Perplexity Launches New $200 Monthly Subscription Plan

Perplexity has unveiled a subscription plan designed for advanced users, priced at $200 per month, as detailed in a blog post released on Tuesday.

The new service, Perplexity Max, offers unlimited access to the company’s spreadsheet and report generation tool, Labs, alongside early access to upcoming features, including the AI-powered browser, Comet, set to release soon. Subscribers to Max will also enjoy priority access to all Perplexity services utilizing the latest models, such as OpenAI’s o3-pro and Claude Opus 4.

With the launch of Max, Perplexity aligns itself with other AI companies that have introduced ultra-premium subscription tiers tailored for power users. OpenAI led the way with its $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro plan, while Google, Anthropic, and Cursor have rolled out similar offerings recently.

Perplexity now features a variety of subscription plans. Besides the $200-per-month Max plan, the company also provides a consumer Pro plan at $20 per month and an Enterprise Pro plan offered at $40 per user per month. Plans are in the works for a hyper-premium Max option targeted at Enterprise clients as well.

In 2024, Perplexity reported roughly $34 million in revenue, largely driven by its $20-per-month Pro subscriptions, although it faced a cash burn of about $65 million according to financial documents analyzed by The Information. A significant portion of this cash burn is attributed to high expenditures on cloud servers and acquisitions of AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Perplexity’s operations seem to have grown since last year, reportedly achieving an ARR of $80 million in January. However, the startup must significantly boost its revenue to justify its current valuation. In May, Perplexity entered late-stage negotiations for a $500 million funding round at a valuation of $14 billion, although the conclusion of this round remains uncertain.

Nonetheless, competition within the AI search market is intensifying for Perplexity. Recently, Google has been vigorously promoting AI Mode, its own AI-driven search solution, which bears a close resemblance to Perplexity’s application. OpenAI has also enhanced its search integration within ChatGPT and is reportedly weighing the launch of its own browser.

A pivotal element in Perplexity’s success may lie in its partnerships with AI providers that furnish it with models, while simultaneously outpacing these competitors in the AI search space. The additional revenue from Perplexity Max subscribers could bolster the startup’s competitive standing in this domain.
