Exciting News: On-Demand Stem Cell Therapy for Pets Coming Soon!
This week, Gallant, a startup based in San Diego, announced that it has secured $18 million to create the first FDA-approved, ready-to-use stem cell therapy specifically designed for veterinary applications. If approved, this innovative treatment could significantly enhance medical care for our cherished pets.
While there have been considerable advancements in stem cell research for human applications, much of it remains in the experimental stages. Established seven years ago, Gallant is concentrating on a painful oral condition in cats known as Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS), with the goal of gaining FDA approval by early 2026.
Preliminary research in this field displays promising results. Studies conducted with dogs suffering from arthritis have reported significant improvements in pain relief and mobility, with effects lasting up to two years. However, outcomes for comparable treatments targeting kidney disease in cats—another area of interest for Gallant—have been less conclusive.
What distinguishes Gallant is its unique approach. Unlike many stem cell therapies that necessitate cell extraction from the patient or a compatible donor, Gallant utilizes ready-to-use cells sourced from various donor animals.
Investors are beginning to recognize the substantial potential of this initiative. This funding round was led by existing investor Digitalis Ventures, with additional backing from NovaQuest Capital Management, which is known for investing in the first FDA-approved human stem cell therapy.
The company’s history is equally noteworthy. Gallant was founded by Aaron Hirschhorn, who previously sold DogVacay to its primary competitor, Rover. Following his passing in 2021, Linda Black has assumed the roles of president and chief scientific officer since the company’s inception. To date, Gallant has successfully raised over $44 million from a diverse group of investors.
