Exciting News: On-Demand Stem Cell Treatments for Pets Coming Soon!

This week, Gallant, a startup located in San Diego, announced it has obtained $18 million to create the first FDA-approved, ready-to-use stem cell therapy specifically for veterinary applications. If granted approval, this treatment could significantly enhance options for our cherished pets.

Although there have been significant breakthroughs in human stem cell studies, much of this research remains experimental. Established seven years ago, Gallant is targeting a painful oral disease in cats known as Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS) and aims to secure FDA approval by early 2026.

Initial results in this field are encouraging. Studies involving dogs suffering from arthritis show notable improvements in pain relief and mobility, with benefits lasting up to two years. Conversely, results for similar treatments addressing kidney disease in cats—another area of Gallant’s focus—have been less conclusive.

What differentiates Gallant is its innovative approach. Unlike many stem cell therapies that necessitate cell extraction from either the patient or a compatible donor, Gallant utilizes ready-to-use cells retrieved from various donor animals.

Investors are beginning to acknowledge the substantial potential of this initiative. This funding round was spearheaded by existing investor Digitalis Ventures, with further backing from NovaQuest Capital Management, a firm recognized for its investments in the first FDA-approved human stem cell therapy.

The company’s background is also noteworthy. Gallant’s founder, Aaron Hirschhorn, previously sold DogVacay to its primary competitor, Rover. Following his passing in 2021, Linda Black assumed the roles of president and chief scientific officer since the company’s inception. To date, Gallant has successfully raised over $44 million from investors.
