Exciting News: On-Demand Stem Cell Treatments for Pets Coming Soon!
This week, Gallant, a startup based in San Diego, announced that it has raised $18 million to create the first FDA-approved, ready-to-use stem cell therapy designed specifically for veterinary applications. If it receives approval, this treatment could significantly enhance the medical options available for our cherished pets.
Despite remarkable progress in human stem cell research, much of this work is still in the experimental stage. Founded seven years ago, Gallant is concentrating on a painful oral condition in cats known as Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis (FCGS) and aims to pursue FDA approval by early 2026.
Initial research in this field shows promise. Studies on dogs suffering from arthritis have indicated substantial improvements in pain relief and mobility, with benefits lasting for up to two years. Conversely, results for similar treatments aimed at kidney disease in cats—another focus area for Gallant—have been less conclusive.
What distinguishes Gallant is its innovative approach. Unlike many stem cell therapies that necessitate cell extraction from the patient or a matching donor, Gallant utilizes ready-to-use cells sourced from various donor animals.
Investors are beginning to acknowledge the significant potential of this initiative. This funding round was spearheaded by existing investor Digitalis Ventures, with further backing from NovaQuest Capital Management, renowned for its investments in the first FDA-approved human stem cell therapy.
The company’s background is equally impressive. Gallant was founded by Aaron Hirschhorn, who previously sold DogVacay to its primary rival, Rover. Following his passing in 2021, Linda Black has assumed the roles of president and chief scientific officer since the company’s inception. To date, Gallant has successfully raised over $44 million from a variety of investors.
