GenAI: The Revolutionary Shopping Assistant Set to Make Waves This Prime Day
A recent study indicates that AI will significantly enhance the online shopping experience during Amazon’s Prime Day, which started Tuesday morning. This year’s annual event, taking place from July 8-11, is projected to yield $23.8 billion in online expenditures across U.S. e-commerce platforms, as various companies introduce their own competing promotions for this popular shopping event.
Adobe, recognized for its e-commerce insights released during major online shopping events like Black Friday, offers a comprehensive overview of online commerce by analyzing transactions across the internet. Their research encompasses over 1 trillion visits to U.S. retail websites, featuring 100 million SKUs across 18 different product categories.
For this year, Adobe estimates that Prime Day will be comparable to “two Black Fridays.” The expected $23.8 billion in spending over these four days reflects a 28.4% increase from the previous year, adding $9.6 billion to the totals from the same period last year.
Mobile shopping is set to play a crucial role, contributing more than half (52.5%) of total sales, while generative AI is also anticipated to make an impact.
During the Prime Day event, Adobe projects that traffic from AI sources will surge by 3,200% year-over-year. Although this figure still trails behind other channels like paid search and email, Adobe expects continued growth as shoppers discover the advantages of using AI for their purchases.
The firm noted that AI-driven chatbots and browsers experienced a significant rise in usage during the 2024 holiday season, with traffic from these sources increasing by 1,300% compared to the previous year from November 1 to December 31, 2024.
Additionally, a survey of 5,000 U.S. consumers showed that users are utilizing generative AI for a variety of tasks: research (55% of respondents), product recommendations (47%), finding deals (43%), generating gift ideas (35%), discovering unique items (35%), and compiling shopping lists (33%).
Among those who used generative AI, 92% reported that it enhanced their shopping experience, and 87% stated they would be more likely to use AI for larger or more complex purchases.
AI providers are capitalizing on this trend by integrating AI into the shopping journey, as seen in Google’s Gemini-enhanced product search and OpenAI’s introduction of shopping functionalities in ChatGPT, among others.
According to Adobe’s forecasts, this Prime Day, consumers are expected to focus on discounts, particularly in the apparel category, while back-to-school items are also anticipated to drive sales this year.
