Tesla Reportedly Close to Launching Sales in India

As reported by Bloomberg News, Tesla is poised to debut its electric vehicles in India after years of anticipation. The company plans to launch its first showroom in Mumbai, with deliveries potentially kicking off as soon as August, according to the report.

Following Bloomberg’s announcement, Tesla created an account for its Indian branch on CEO Elon Musk’s social media platform, X. The account features a single post showcasing a graphic of the Mumbai skyline, paired with the caption “Coming soon.”

Tesla is actively expanding into various new markets as it faces diminishing prospects in others due to an aging EV lineup. Earlier this year, the company began selling EVs in the affluent nation of Saudi Arabia.

India poses unique challenges for Tesla, especially concerning pricing. The company will need to export fully assembled vehicles, resulting in a steep 70% import duty, as reported by Reuters. Although Tesla had previously engaged with Indian government officials and was close to finalizing plans for a local factory, the arrangement ultimately fell through.
