Meta Acquires Play AI, a Startup Focused on Voice Technology
Meta has officially acquired Play AI, a well-known company specializing in AI-generated voices that closely resemble human speech.
A representative from Meta confirmed the acquisition to Bloomberg, which also referenced an internal memo stating that the “entire PlayAI team” is expected to integrate into Meta next week. (TechCrunch has also sought verification from Meta.)
The memo highlighted that PlayAI’s “proficiency in developing natural-sounding voices and its streamlined voice production platform align seamlessly with our goals in AI Characters, Meta AI, Wearables, and audio content creation.”
Meta has significantly increased its investments in AI, stepping up recruitment at OpenAI and forming a partnership with Scale AI. This partnership led to Scale AI’s CEO, Alexandr Wang, joining Meta to spearhead a new team dedicated to superintelligence.
No financial details regarding the acquisition have been made public. Bloomberg had reported earlier that both companies were in talks about the acquisition.
