Meta Acquires Play AI, a Startup Focused on Voice Technology

Meta has officially acquired Play AI, a firm celebrated for its human-like voices generated by AI.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed the acquisition to Bloomberg, which additionally noted an internal memo stating that the “entire PlayAI team” is expected to join Meta next week. (TechCrunch has also reached out for confirmation from Meta.)

The memo highlighted that PlayAI’s “skills in developing natural voices, along with a platform for efficient voice production, align seamlessly with our goals and strategies in AI Characters, Meta AI, Wearables, and audio content creation.”

Meta has been significantly investing in AI, increasing hiring at OpenAI and forming a partnership with Scale AI, which led to its CEO, Alexandr Wang, coming on board at Meta to lead a new team focused on superintelligence.

The financial specifics of the acquisition remain undisclosed. Bloomberg previously reported that negotiations between the two companies regarding the acquisition were in progress.
