Mark Zuckerberg Unveils Meta’s Vision for a 5GW AI Data Center
Meta is currently building a data center named Hyperion, which CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared in a Monday post on Threads is expected to supply its new AI lab with five gigawatts (GW) of computational power.
This announcement is a key part of Meta’s plan to surpass OpenAI and Google within the competitive AI arena. After hiring top experts for the Meta Superintelligence Lab, including former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and ex-Safe Superintelligence CEO Daniel Gross, Meta is prioritizing the acquisition of significant computational resources necessary for developing cutting-edge AI models.
Zuckerberg mentioned that the scale of Hyperion would be akin to covering most of Manhattan. He also revealed intentions to introduce a 1 GW super cluster, named Prometheus, in 2026, positioning Meta as one of the first tech firms to reach this milestone.
The enhancement of Meta’s AI data center is expected to boost its competitiveness against OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic in training and deploying elite AI models. This initiative may also draw more talent looking to join a company with the computational power to compete in the AI landscape.
Together, Prometheus and Hyperion will require enough energy to power millions of homes, potentially influencing local electricity and water resources. For example, one of Meta’s data center projects in Newton County, Georgia, has reportedly led to some residents facing water shortages, according to The New York Times on Monday.
Other AI data center ventures might pose similar challenges for surrounding residents. CoreWeave, an AI hyperscaler, plans an expansion that could double the electricity needs of a city near Dallas, Texas, as reported by Bloomberg.
Despite these issues, tech companies are determined to continue developing extensive data center projects to meet their AI goals. Significant initiatives include OpenAI’s Stargate project in partnership with Oracle and Softbank, along with xAI’s Colossus supercomputer.
The Trump administration has strongly supported the tech industry’s data center growth. Former President Donald Trump aided OpenAI in announcing its Stargate project and has promoted the expansion of the country’s AI infrastructure.
In a column featured in The Economist on Monday, U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright urged the U.S. to “lead the next major energy-intensive frontier: artificial intelligence.” He emphasized that AI turns electricity into “the most valuable output imaginable: intelligence,” and noted that the federal government would expedite energy production from coal, nuclear, geothermal, and natural gas sources.
With federal support, the AI sector appears poised to consume a substantial portion of America’s energy in the coming years. Experts predict that data centers could account for 20% of the nation’s energy usage by 2030, up from just 2.5% in 2022. Without a swift increase in energy production, this may intensify existing challenges for local communities.
