Microsoft Suspends Collaboration with Chinese Engineers on Defense Initiatives

After a Pro Publica investigation revealed that Microsoft employed engineers in China for cloud computing services linked to the U.S. Department of Defense, the company has implemented new policies to avoid similar situations in the future.

The previous strategy reportedly involved using “digital escorts” to supervise these engineers in China. However, Pro Publica highlighted that these escorts — U.S. citizens with security clearances — often lacked the technical skills necessary to effectively oversee the engineers.

In response to these revelations, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth commented on X, asserting, “Engineers from foreign nations — especially China — must NEVER have access to or be permitted to manage DoD systems.”

On Friday, Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer, Frank X. Shaw, addressed the issue by stating, “In light of the concerns raised this week regarding U.S.-supervised foreign engineers, Microsoft has bolstered our support for U.S. Government clients to guarantee that no engineering teams based in China are involved in providing technical support for DoD cloud services and related offerings.”
