Microsoft Suspends Collaboration with Chinese Engineers on Defense Initiatives
In response to a Pro Publica investigation revealing that Microsoft employed engineers in China for cloud computing services linked to the U.S. Department of Defense, the company has implemented new policies to avert similar situations in the future.
Previously, the strategy involved using “digital escorts” to monitor these engineers in China. However, Pro Publica noted that these escorts—U.S. citizens with security clearances—often lacked sufficient technical expertise to supervise the engineers effectively.
Following these revelations, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth remarked on X, “Engineers from foreign countries—particularly China—must NEVER have access to or be permitted to manage DoD systems.”
On Friday, Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer, Frank X. Shaw, replied by stating, “In light of the concerns raised this week regarding U.S.-supervised foreign engineers, Microsoft has bolstered our support for U.S. Government clients to ensure that no engineering teams in China are involved in providing technical support for DoD cloud services and associated offerings.”
