Microsoft Suspends Collaboration with Chinese Engineers on Defense Initiatives

Following an investigation by Pro Publica that revealed Microsoft employed engineers in China for cloud computing projects linked to the U.S. Department of Defense, the company has implemented measures to prevent similar situations from arising in the future.

Previously, Microsoft utilized “digital escorts” to monitor these engineers in China. However, Pro Publica highlighted that these escorts—U.S. citizens with security clearances—often lacked the technical expertise required to effectively supervise the engineers.

In response to these revelations, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth remarked on X, “Engineers from foreign nations—especially China—must NEVER be granted access to or authority over DoD systems.”

On Friday, Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer, Frank X. Shaw, announced, “In light of the concerns raised this week regarding U.S.-supervised foreign engineers, Microsoft has intensified our support for U.S. Government clients to ensure that no engineering teams in China are involved in providing technical assistance for DoD cloud services and related products.”
