Sundar Pichai Shares Excitement About Google Cloud’s Collaboration with OpenAI

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, shares his excitement about supplying cloud computing resources to OpenAI, a prominent competitor in the AI sector, through a new collaboration.

“We are excited to partner with OpenAI on Google Cloud,” Pichai mentioned during Google’s second quarter earnings call on Wednesday. “Google Cloud is an open platform with a rich history of bolstering innovative companies, startups, and AI labs. We are eager about this collaboration and look forward to investing in and growing this relationship further.”

His remarks came after analysts raised questions about the influence of AI on Google’s core search business and the additional $10 billion in capital expenditures this year aimed at maintaining competitiveness in the AI field. Since the introduction of ChatGPT around two and a half years ago, Google has focused on developing premier AI models and products to directly compete with OpenAI.

While ChatGPT poses a notable challenge to Google Search, the partnership with OpenAI marks a considerable new client for Google Cloud. Managing this relationship will require care, as OpenAI could potentially utilize Google’s cloud services and infrastructure to disrupt Google’s primary search offering.

Earlier this month, OpenAI quietly added Google Cloud to its public list of cloud service providers, joining Microsoft and Oracle. A report from Reuters in June indicated that OpenAI was contemplating the use of Google Cloud for increased computational resources.

In the second quarter of 2025, Google Cloud’s revenue soared to $13.6 billion, up from $10.3 billion in the same period last year. A significant portion of this growth is linked to the Google Cloud Platform and various offerings tailored for AI companies. While Google Cloud is still a smaller segment compared to Google Search, it seems to be growing rapidly in this AI-driven landscape.

Numerous leading AI labs have partnered with Google Cloud, including Anthropic, Safe Superintelligence led by Ilya Sutskever, World Labs by Fei Fei Li, and now OpenAI. Pichai noted during the earnings call that the company has excelled in establishing partnerships with major AI labs due to its ample supply of Nvidia GPU and proprietary TPU chips.

Google Cloud seems to be a strategic ally for OpenAI, particularly as OpenAI faces significant limitations regarding Nvidia GPUs, which are crucial for training its AI models and serving millions of users. These constraints have created tension with Microsoft, OpenAI’s main backer and cloud provider, leading OpenAI to explore alternatives within the cloud sector.

On the AI product front, Google appears to be exceeding expectations. The company reports that its AI chatbot, Gemini, now boasts 450 million monthly active users, while AI Overviews is reaching 2 billion monthly active users. Nevertheless, the commercial viability of these products and their impact on Google Search remain uncertain.

It appears improbable that Pichai is genuinely looking forward to collaborating with OpenAI, given that the company poses the greatest threat to Google Search. This partnership is reminiscent of an earlier agreement between Google and Yahoo when Google was a fledgling startup, utilizing Yahoo’s homepage to establish itself as the primary gateway to the internet. The future of OpenAI’s partnership with Google is still uncertain.
