Tesla Faces Hurdles in Achieving 5,000-Unit Production Goal for Optimus Bot This Year

According to a recent report from The Information, Tesla is struggling to meet its goal of producing at least 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots by the end of the year. With less than eight months remaining in 2025, industry analysts estimate that only a few hundred units have been manufactured to date. This situation poses a significant challenge for Tesla, necessitating either an enhancement in production capabilities or a reassessment of their timelines.

This development comes on the heels of Tesla announcing a 12% decline in overall revenue for the second quarter, largely attributed to a decrease in EV sales, reduced earnings from regulatory credits, and a slump in both solar and energy storage sectors. In a recent Q2 earnings call, Musk indicated that production of the new Optimus 3 model is anticipated to commence early next year.

“Our aim is to significantly boost Optimus production, targeting a capacity of up to a million units annually as swiftly as possible,” Musk remarked. “We are hopeful that this can be accomplished within five years. It’s a feasible goal.”

It’s worth noting that Musk has made similarly ambitious claims in the past. During Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day, he predicted that one million robotaxis would be operational by 2020. Two years later, he asserted that mass production of robotaxis would commence by 2024. To date, neither of these forecasts has come to fruition.
