Tesla Reportedly Struggling to Meet 5,000 Optimus Bot Production Goal for the Year
According to reports from The Information, Tesla is facing challenges in achieving its ambitious goal of producing at least 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots this year. With nearly eight months remaining in 2025, sources reveal that production has only reached a few hundred units. This situation places Tesla at a critical crossroads: they need to either ramp up manufacturing speed or reevaluate their timeline.
This development follows Tesla’s announcement of a 12% decline in total revenue for the second quarter, primarily due to falling EV sales, reduced earnings from regulatory credits, and a drop in solar and energy storage revenue. During a recent Q2 earnings call, Musk indicated that production for the new Optimus 3 design is expected to start early next year.
“Our objective is to significantly boost Optimus production, targeting up to a million units annually in the shortest possible time,” Musk remarked. “We believe this can be accomplished within five years. It’s an attainable goal.”
It’s worth noting that Musk has previously made similarly ambitious promises. During Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day, he projected the launch of a million robotaxis by 2020. Two years later, he announced that mass production of robotaxis would start by 2024. Thus far, neither of these predictions has come to fruition.
