Tesla Reportedly Struggling to Meet 5,000 Optimus Bot Production Goal This Year
According to reports from The Information, Tesla is facing challenges in achieving its ambitious goal of producing at least 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots this year. With almost eight months remaining in 2025, sources suggest that production has only reached the hundreds. This places Tesla at a critical turning point: they need to ramp up manufacturing or rethink their timeline.
This revelation follows Tesla’s announcement of a 12% decline in total revenue for the second quarter, mainly due to falling EV sales, reduced earnings from regulatory credits, and a drop in solar and energy storage revenue. In a Q2 earnings call earlier this week, Musk mentioned that production of the new Optimus 3 design is expected to commence early next year.
“Our aim is to swiftly boost Optimus production, looking to achieve up to a million units annually in the shortest possible time frame,” Musk stated. “We are confident this is feasible within five years. It’s a realistic target.”
It’s worth noting that Musk has made similar ambitious claims in the past. During Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day, he projected the introduction of a million robotaxis by 2020. Two years later, he asserted that mass production of robotaxis would start by 2024. So far, neither of these predictions has come to fruition.
