Tesla Reportedly Struggling to Meet 5,000-Unit Production Goal for Optimus Bot This Year

According to reports from The Information, Tesla is facing challenges in reaching its ambitious goal of producing at least 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots this year. With nearly eight months remaining in 2025, sources suggest that production has only achieved several hundred units. This situation places Tesla at a critical crossroads: they must either speed up manufacturing or reevaluate their timelines.

This development follows Tesla’s announcement of a 12% drop in total revenue for the second quarter, primarily due to declining EV sales, reduced earnings from regulatory credits, and a fall in solar and energy storage revenue. In a recent Q2 earnings call, Musk indicated that production for the new Optimus 3 design is expected to begin early next year.

“Our objective is to significantly boost Optimus production, with a target of up to a million units annually in the shortest timeframe possible,” Musk remarked. “We are confident this can be accomplished within five years. It’s a feasible goal.”

It’s worth mentioning that Musk has made similarly bold promises before. During Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day, he projected that a million robotaxis would be operational by 2020. Two years later, he announced that mass production of robotaxis would kick off by 2024. To this day, neither of these predictions has come to fruition.
