Tesla Struggles to Achieve 5,000-Unit Production Goal for Optimus Bot This Year

According to a recent report from The Information, Tesla is struggling to meet its goal of producing at least 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots by year-end. With fewer than eight months remaining in 2025, industry insiders suggest that only a few hundred units have been manufactured to date. This situation poses a significant challenge for Tesla, necessitating either an enhancement of production capabilities or a reassessment of their timelines.

This issue arises shortly after Tesla reported a 12% decline in overall revenue for the second quarter, largely attributed to decreasing EV sales, diminished earnings from regulatory credits, and a slump in both solar and energy storage sectors. In a recent earnings call for Q2, Musk mentioned that production of the new Optimus 3 model is expected to commence early next year.

“Our objective is to significantly boost Optimus production, targeting a capacity of up to a million units per year as swiftly as possible,” Musk remarked. “We are hopeful that this is achievable within five years. It’s an attainable goal.”

It’s worth noting that Musk has made similarly grand predictions in the past. During Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day, he anticipated that one million robotaxis would be in operation by 2020. Two years later, he claimed that mass production of robotaxis would begin by 2024. To date, neither prediction has come to fruition.
