Tesla Struggles to Achieve 5,000-Unit Production Goal for Optimus Bot This Year

Recent insights from The Information indicate that Tesla is facing challenges in its goal to produce a minimum of 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots by year-end. With less than eight months remaining in 2025, sources suggest that only a few hundred units have been manufactured up to this point. This situation puts Tesla in a pivotal position, necessitating either a boost in production capabilities or a reassessment of their timelines.

This setback follows Tesla’s report of a 12% decline in total revenue for the second quarter, largely attributed to a decrease in EV sales, diminished earnings from regulatory credits, and a decline in both solar and energy storage sectors. During a recent Q2 earnings call, Musk mentioned that production of the new Optimus 3 model is expected to kick off early next year.

“Our objective is to significantly increase Optimus production, targeting a capacity of up to a million units annually as swiftly as possible,” Musk remarked. “We are confident this is feasible within five years. It’s an achievable goal.”

It’s worth noting that Musk has made similar lofty predictions in the past. At Tesla’s 2019 Autonomy Day, he estimated that one million robotaxis would be operational by 2020. Two years later, he claimed that mass production of robotaxis would begin by 2024. As of now, neither of these forecasts has come to fruition.
