AI-Enhanced Journey: Immersive Transformation of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in a Spherical Experience

The renowned Sphere venue in Las Vegas is gearing up to showcase the cherished classic, “The Wizard of Oz,” starting August 28. Featured on CBS Sunday Morning, this initiative aims to provide an experience that transcends a standard screening of the original film on Sphere’s expansive 160,000 square foot wraparound LED display.

James Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, revealed that a specialized team of 2,000 professionals is dedicated to creating a one-of-a-kind viewing experience. This project leverages AI technology to enhance the film’s clarity and extend visual elements beyond their initial confines.

For example, Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz pointed out that AI can transform “a grainy close-up of Dorothy into an astonishingly detailed image.” By employing an advanced technique called outpainting, viewers can explore the intricacies of the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the enchanting lands of Oz.

In certain situations, expanding the frame may necessitate generating additional performances from the original cast.

Despite these innovations, Dolan stressed, “Our aim was not to modify the film in any way but to fully immerse you in the experience, allowing you to feel as though you were present during its making.”
