AI-Enhanced Journey: Transforming ‘The Wizard of Oz’ into an Immersive Spherical Experience

The renowned Sphere venue in Las Vegas is set to showcase the cherished classic, “The Wizard of Oz,” starting August 28. Featured on CBS Sunday Morning, this initiative strives to offer an experience that transcends conventional film presentations, leveraging Sphere’s expansive 160,000 square foot wraparound LED display.

James Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, mentioned that a dedicated team of 2,000 experts is working to create a distinctive viewing experience. This project uses AI technology to improve the film’s clarity and broaden visual aspects beyond their initial limits.

For example, Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz highlighted that AI can transform “a grainy close-up of Dorothy into a remarkably detailed image.” Through a sophisticated technique called outpainting, viewers can explore the rich details of the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the enchanting realms of Oz.

In some cases, expanding the frame may necessitate generating additional performances from the original cast.

Despite these innovations, Dolan stressed, “Our intention was not to change the film in any way but to completely immerse you in the experience, making you feel as if you were there during its creation.”
