Google Chrome Introduces AI-Powered Store Summaries to Help US Shoppers
Google on Monday announced an update to its Chrome web browser that will introduce AI-generated store reviews to U.S. shoppers, aiming to assist in finding the best places to make a purchase. The feature, which can be accessed by clicking an icon located just to the left of the web address in the browser, will display a pop-up that informs consumers about the store’s reputation for aspects such as product quality, shopping experience, pricing, customer service, and returns.
The feature, currently available only in English, will generate summaries based on reviews from partners including Bazaarvoice, Bizrate Insights, Reputation.com, Reseller Ratings, ScamAdviser, Trustpilot, TurnTo, Yotpo, Verified Reviews, and others.
The feature will initially be available for Chrome on desktop. When asked for comment, Google could not confirm whether or when AI summaries would be available on mobile devices.

Google states that the objective of the summaries is to provide a safer and more efficient shopping experience. However, this feature also enables Google to better compete with other AI functionalities introduced by retail giant Amazon, which uses similar technology to summarize product ratings and reviews, assist customers in finding clothes that fit, provide product recommendations and comparisons, among other capabilities.
These changes arrive as Google, for the first time in many years, faces a potential competitive threat to Chrome’s dominance in the global browser market.
New AI-powered browsers such as Perplexity’s Comet, The Browser Company’s Dia, Opera Neon, and potentially a challenger from OpenAI have prompted the search giant to consider integrating AI more directly into its web browser. For instance, Google is developing an AI agent capable of executing tasks within Chrome on your behalf. Additionally, the company has recently added support for its Gemini AI assistant in Chrome for Gemini subscribers.
This initiative is part of a broader effort at Google to transform itself into a modern shopping platform for consumers.
Furthermore, the company has leveraged AI to assist customers in finding products of interest, receiving personalized product recommendations, and virtually trying on clothes. It has also been developing tools for enhanced price tracking, shopping in Google’s AI Mode, and AI-powered agentic checkout. (The latter two were unveiled at this year’s Google I/O developer conference, with the rollout of outfit and room inspiration in AI Mode planned for this fall.)
