Reimagining ‘The Wizard of Oz’: An AI-Driven Interactive Spherical Journey
Starting August 28, the iconic Sphere venue in Las Vegas will present the cherished classic, “The Wizard of Oz.” Highlighted on CBS Sunday Morning, this initiative aims to provide an experience that transcends typical film screenings by utilizing Sphere’s extraordinary 160,000 square foot wraparound LED display.
James Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, shared that a team of 2,000 professionals is focused on creating a remarkable viewing experience. This initiative uses AI technology to enhance the film’s resolution and improve visual details beyond their original qualities.
For example, Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz noted that AI can transform “a grainy close-up of Dorothy into an incredibly detailed image.” Through a state-of-the-art technique known as outpainting, audiences will explore the intricate features of the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the enchanting landscapes of Oz.
Additionally, the expanded frame may incorporate extra performances by the original cast.
Nonetheless, Dolan emphasized, “Our goal was not to change the film, but to enhance your immersion in the experience, making you feel as if you were present during its creation.”
