Reimagining ‘The Wizard of Oz’: An AI-Driven Interactive Spherical Journey
Starting August 28, the iconic Sphere venue in Las Vegas will present the cherished classic, “The Wizard of Oz.” Featured on CBS Sunday Morning, this event seeks to provide an experience that transcends conventional film screenings, utilizing Sphere’s stunning 160,000 square foot wraparound LED display.
James Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, announced that a dedicated team of 2,000 experts is working to create an outstanding viewing experience. This initiative employs AI technology to enhance the film’s resolution and elevate visual details beyond their original quality.
For example, Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz highlighted that AI can transform “a grainy close-up of Dorothy into a remarkably detailed image.” Through an innovative technique known as outpainting, viewers will explore the intricate details of the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the enchanting landscapes of Oz.
In some cases, expanding the frame may include featuring additional performances from the original cast.
However, Dolan emphasized, “Our aim was not to modify the film but to immerse you in the experience itself, making you feel as though you were there during its creation.”
