Reinventing ‘The Wizard of Oz’: An AI-Powered Interactive Spherical Experience

Starting August 28, the iconic Sphere venue in Las Vegas will present the cherished classic, “The Wizard of Oz.” Highlighted on CBS Sunday Morning, this initiative aims to deliver an experience that transcends conventional film screenings, utilizing Sphere’s impressive 160,000 square foot wraparound LED display.

James Dolan, CEO of Sphere Entertainment, mentioned that a dedicated team of 2,000 professionals is focused on creating an extraordinary viewing experience. This project employs AI technology to enhance the film’s clarity and broaden visual elements beyond their original presentation.

For example, Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz remarked that AI can convert “a grainy close-up of Dorothy into an extraordinarily detailed image.” Through a cutting-edge technique called outpainting, audiences will explore the intricate details of the Scarecrow, the Yellow Brick Road, and the enchanting landscapes of Oz.

In some cases, expanding the frame may necessitate including additional performances from the original cast.

Nonetheless, Dolan highlighted, “Our objective was not to modify the film but to immerse you in the experience itself, making you feel as though you were there during its creation.”
