Tea App Data Breach Leaks More Than One Million Private Messages

Last week, the dating safety app Tea experienced a data breach that affected 72,000 sensitive images, including selfies and photo IDs used for account verification, as well as images from user posts and messages. This personal data was reportedly shared by users on 4chan.

As per a report from 404 Media, which quoted independent security researcher Kasra Rahjerdi, a second security vulnerability further exposed user data, revealing conversations where users shared phone numbers and discussed sensitive topics like abortions and infidelity.

The app is intended to provide a platform for women to post insights about their dating experiences. Last week, it released a statement regarding the initial breach, stating that it affected users who registered prior to February 2024. Rahjerdi identified messages dating back to early 2023 and continuing until last week, documenting over 1.1 million messages.

Launched in 2023, Tea has rapidly risen in popularity and currently ranks second on the top free app charts in Apple’s App Store.
