Proton Unveils New Two-Factor Authentication App

Proton, the company recognized for its privacy-focused productivity tools, has launched a new authenticator app today, allowing users to access services via dynamically generated two-factor authentication codes.

The app, which is free on all major platforms—iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux—enables users to easily sync their codes and accounts across devices. Like other Proton products, Proton Authenticator is open source and utilizes end-to-end encryption to protect user information.

The company noted that users can easily import login codes from other authentication apps. Furthermore, the app offers automatic code backups and operates without an internet connection.

“Two-factor authentication is essential for everyone, not just those concerned about privacy. Proton Authenticator is tailored for anyone looking for a secure, transparent, and user-friendly way to protect their accounts,” stated Eamonn Maguire, Head of Account Security at Proton.

“We believe that strong security should not sacrifice convenience or privacy. With Proton Authenticator, we aim to ensure that users can access their 2FA codes wherever they are, without relying on Google or Microsoft, empowering them to control their data and access to online accounts,” he further added.

Using an authenticator app for two-factor authentication enhances security, reducing the risk of account breaches. While SMS-based two-factor authentication is available, it is often vulnerable to SIM swapping attacks, where hackers can intercept calls and messages.

Proton is currently experiencing a wave of product releases. Earlier this week, they debuted a privacy-focused AI chatbot named Lumo, which ensures that no conversation logs are stored and that user data is not used for model training.
