Reddit’s Revenue Soars Thanks to AI and Advertising Investments
On Thursday, Reddit announced its earnings for the second quarter, highlighting a notable increase in its commitment to AI technology.
A key area of investment focuses on enhancing its advertising segment, supported by advanced AI-powered marketing tools. The earnings report emphasized that the majority of Reddit’s revenue, totaling $465 million, which represents 93% of its overall income, is still derived from advertisements.
Last month, Reddit rolled out two new features for advertisers: Reddit Insights, which leverages the platform’s extensive posts and comments to uncover trends and provide real-time insights for campaign strategies, and Conversation Summary Add-ons, allowing advertisers to integrate discussions from Reddit users into their ads, showcasing public sentiments around products or brands.
Additionally, the company reported growth in its “other revenue” segment, which includes its data licensing activities — particularly agreements with AI companies for access to data. Reddit saw a 24% year-over-year increase in this area, reaching $35 million, up from $28.1 million during the same period last year.
Reddit has established content licensing partnerships with major AI companies, including Google and OpenAI. Though these agreements are fairly new, the results from the second quarter suggest a steady revenue stream with significant long-term potential.
Another crucial AI-augmented feature is the Reddit Answers tool, launched in December. This feature, which provides responses in a conversational style, has grown to 6 million weekly users, a substantial rise from 1 million users in the previous quarter.
In a letter to shareholders, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman mentioned that the platform intends to integrate this tool “more deeply into the core search experience” to establish “search as a central feature across Reddit.”
